analysis of supernatural season one and two

The sound matches the mood
Facial expression(s)
In between scenes the image on the screen doesn't fade to black it just cuts to a black screen.
The costumes ; both the main characters wear jeans that look faded/worn out, dean wears either a normal T-shirt or a polo shirt with a leather jacket or a normal top over it. He has a small amount of stubble this makes him look rugged this is important because dean is a strong, protective, loyal, determined, car crazy and can be slightly emotionally detached so his costume reflects those parts of his character. He also wears a leather jacket that is too big for him this is important because it was his dads jacket and he is trying to fill his dads shoes
Sam on the other hand usually wears checkered button up shirts with a normal jacket over the top of it and worn out jeans. The checkered shirt reflects his brainy nature.

The font used on the end credits looks like typewriter font and is white so it stands out on the black background, this pairs well with the creepy background sound of the credits

Season one episode 21 "Devils Trap"
In one of the scenes where they are in the car talking to each other the camera cuts between Sam and Dean using side shots of their faces which stand out against that black background.
Lights flash against their faces which creates more shadows and matches the dark atmosphere.
From the end of one scene and in to another their is the sound of a guitar and drums in the background until Dean and Bobby start talking, shadows play on bobby's face.

The sound of a dog frantically barking outside interrupts their conversation then suddenly stops this puts everyone on edge a few seconds later someone that has been possessed by a demon kicks the door open and storms in.
During the interrogation scene there is a fire burning in the background, it could be interpreted as representing hell.
In this particular scene the use of shadows, sparse lighting, eerie background music, facial expressions and fire add to the atmosphere of the scene.
Contacts are used to give people 'demon eyes' (usually black) that show when the demon possessing someone reveals itself to one of the hunters when its trapped.
The camera focuses on dean and Sam who is in the background goes blurry and vice versa when the camera switches to Sam.
Near the end when Deans talking about killing possessed people and what he would do to protect Sam and their dad you can hear the sound of a piano in the background.
At one point the lights flicker and the wind picks up and because the characters are already on edge this makes the atmosphere even tenser.
Also when Dean realizes that his father John has been possessed he backs away from him and points a gun at him at this point johns eyes flash amber this not only shows that he's possessed but also shows that its by a very powerful demon.

Season two episode one "In my time"
In this episode dean is fighting for his life and has an out of body experience this allows the camera to cut between spirit dean and dean lying on his hospital

research on sleepy hollow / the writing used

The type of writing used in Sleepy Hollow

The type of writing they use on the sleepy hollow poster for the title of the film looks to be Grimm Calligraphy, then they have used a non gothic font for the words Heads Will Role.

What Sleepy Hollow about

Based on the book The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow.
Based in 1799 the film centres around constable Ichabod Crane as he tries to solve the mystery of the murders that have been committed in sleepy hollow by a headless horse man. in the beginning he is sceptical about the horse man until he encounters him when he murders the magistrate Samuel Phillips, he loges at the home of the Van Tassel family and during the investigation starts to fall in love with Van Tassels daughter Katrina. in the end he discovers that Katrina's step mother has been controlling the horseman and he dispatches the horseman who takes Katrina's step mother with him back to hell.

use a music box for the sound rather than a clock, at the end of the opening have the music fade out rather than just stop.

wolf is still a predator but is a human and doesn't change into a wolf, during one of the flashbacks gran says 'wolf's come in many different forms', wolf doesn't eat her/ rip her limb from limb but will kill her. strong and powerful, easily over powers little red.

how my opening will progress shot by shot in bullet points including titles and credits

1st shot - the music box starts playing, screen remains black
2nd shot - title in white or red fades in. stays on the screen for 5-8 seconds.
3rd shot - title fades out scene fades
4th shot - scene fades in. The scene will either be a view of the road that runs through fowlemeads and travel from there OR the scene will start with a flashback - you will see the feet of red and wolf and Lumber Jack run through the puddle.
The beginning of the opening credits will be in the puddle and will disappear when the water ripples when they run through it. If I go with this one it will then cut to the camera traveling through the woods and will continue to cut between the flashbacks and the present.
If I go with the first one you will then see red and then it will cut to a flashback.
5th shot part 1 (original idea) - this is when you will get a side shot of the subject (little red)
5th shot part 2 (new idea) -this shot is in the present and will be when the camera shows the road that runs through fowlemeads before it starts travelling
6th shot part 1 - the camera will become closer to the subject
6th shot part 2 - this will flick back to the flash back where more credits will be shown, you will again see the feet but they will be stepping on leaves or breaking twigs.
7th shot part 1 - the camera will then show an over head shot of the subject.
7th shot part 2 - flicks back to the present where the camera is entering the area where the subject is.
8th shot part 1 - the camera will cut to a flash back.
8th shot part 2 - the camera will cut to a flashback again, this time you will see the subject and the Lumber Jack (her older brother ( little red is about 13 so brother is about 18)) and the wolf ( i have yet to decide who the wolf will be, probably be the older brothers weird/slightly creepy friend).
9th shot part 1 - you will see something similar to 8th shot part 2
9th shot part 2 - cut back to the present you will see the subject from a side view and the camera will travel towards them.
10th shot part 1 - back to present
10th shot part 2 - you will have a close up overhead shot of the subject.
11th shot part 1- there will be a close up view of the subject
11th shot part 2 - camera will show an extreme close up of the subject, you will see their breathing getting shallower/see them stop breathing completely. the music box will stop playing
12th shot - an extreme close up off the subject, back in the present. see them stop breathing. the music box will stop playing
13th shot - fade to black.

How my research has inspired my film:
My research has been made up of mostly horror films but even though they're all slightly similar they have all inspired my film in different ways. For example the company of wolves inspired me to use the music box sound effect. Pans labyrinth inspired me to do shots of the victim as they lay dying, watching and analysing supernatural gave me an idea of how I wanted to do the costume and how much fake blood I wanted to use, it also gave me the idea to base it in the Wood's

the company of wolves, research/analysis 3

The company of wolves (1984)
This film is an adaptation from the bloody chamber by Angela Carter and is a horror/fantasy. It is a story about a young girl who is told by her grandmother strange and disturbing stories about innocent girl that fall in love with handsome strangers that have smoldering looks in their eyes, about unexpected disappearances of spouses when the wolves howl in the woods when the moon is full. The film is directed by Neil Jordan.
Neil Jordan is an Irish a screen write, novelist and director, he has worked on Excalibur as a creative associate, and directed company of wolves, Mona Lisa, Angel, Borgias and Interview with a vampire as well as the commercial flop We're no Angels and many many more. His 1980's films Company of Wolves and Mona Lisa went on win him acclaim. Some of the awards he has won are:
Silver bear for best director for the film The butcher Boy at the Berlin international film festival
An Academy award, best original screenplay for The Crying Game
A Guardian Fiction Award for Night in Tunisia
Was nominated for a Golden Globe twice, one for best original screenplay for Mona Lisa and one for Best Director for The End of the Affair
He's also won an Irish Pen Award.

What I like about this film is the fact that while it makes the wolf her love interest it keeps to the original Grimm story and actually gives you a back story as well (see the wedding bit). One of the main reason I think this is such a great film is that it has a great mix of fantasy/horror and it was made before we had the effects that we have today and the combination of sticking to the story and the lack of effects that we have today make it a great horror film even though it has elements of fantasy. The lack of effects also mean that everyone that worked on it had to put in a lot more time and effort for the desired result.
The use of sound in the film and the trailer is brilliant as even though most if not all of it is non diagetic it is always parallel sound.
one of the things that inspires me about this film is the fact that it uses minimal special effects. I'm inspired by this because now-days its hard to find a film that doesn't rely on Special Effects and instead relies on the smaller things like the music or costumes, this inspires me because it proves that you don't need special effects to make a great movie.

timed opening of The company of Wolves

As soon as the video starts you here a beat, beat, beat in the background and grandma talks over it, after she finishes talking the music changes but you still hear the faint beat, eat, beat sound and gradually the pace of the music becomes faster and faster. All the while you see different parts of the movie playing. at 0:26  writing appears, it says 'once upon a time' it then fades out after 4 seconds and doesn't come back on until 1:00 when it says ' there was a girl', it fade out again and comes back on at 1:41 when it say ' and there was a beast' before fading out again. It appears again at 2:10 and says ' You think you know the story'. At 2:37 you hear the girl talk to the huntsman who s the wolf and at 2:51 the white writing appears on the screen for the last time, it says 'but this is no fairytale and as it fades out the music becomes slower and darker.

rough photos for film opening

These photos are just some of the photos that I took of different location around fowlemeads. I took these pictures so that I could decide which location in Fowlemeads would be the best to shot my film at, in the end I decided to use a location that is only shown in the photos below. When making my decision of which location to use I considered the density of the foliage (how close the trees are together), how much light the branches were letting through and how busy that area was.

Again these are only a few of the photos I took to see which angle the subject should have their heads out and how the light would affect the shot. After taking these photos I have decided that the subject should have their head loll to one side and that the light would not overly effect the shot.
These photos show how i am going to start my opening, the camera will travel through a trees by the site where it will then show the person playing little red with a long side take. The camera will then use a close up. The final shot of the character will be an extreme close up, in this shot you will see that the characters shallow breathing has stopped. The sound of the music box that will be playing in the background will fade out/stop when the characters breathing stops.
However when I shoot the video I will either fold the towel she is on under so that you can't see it or I will cover it with leaves, I will also put more leaves on the part of the path that I will be filming on so that you cant see it.

I made this poster because in my Film opening I'm going to have a clock ticking in the background to represent the persons time running out and when it stops is when she dies so I thought I would take a picture of an old fashioned clock darken it and then make the hole photo look old.

Poster ideas - The Girl in The Woods part 2

I've put up my four different poster ideas and obviously I like them all but the ones I'm leaning towards the most right now are the first one and the third one.
I'm leaning towards using the third one because even though its lighter than the others because of the way I've used shadows, contrast and made the image sharper and faded the writing its actually the eeriest one. I'm leaning towards using the first one because its the darkest and creepiest.

Film Opening credits and titles analysis/opening 2

first of all my computer is being weird and wont let me print screen this so I'm going to have to tell you the time and then tell you what I like about that bit, and secondly I couldn't find the opening credits for The Woman in Black.
0:01 - I like the way the the name of the company fades in, what i like about it is that the company name fades in on a small red background, but when it fades in the red looks like blood before it solidifies.
Magnet Releasing is part of Magnolia Pictures. Magnet Releasing specialize in Horror, Comedy and Action films as well as Asian Cinema. Magnolia Pictures is a distribution arm of Wagner/Cuban companies.

0:08 - The second company name - DraftHouse Films is shown. DraftHouse Films is a distribution arm of Alamo DraftHouse Cinema, DraftHouse Films debuted in 2010 with the release of Four Lions.

0:13 - The last company name, Timpson Films is shown. Timpson Films, which i couldn't find anything relevant about.

0:18 - Your given information about the short film.

0:30 - you fade in from black to s dimly lit room where a book is on the table and is actually the only thing in the shot and then it flips open until it comes to rest on a page.

0:57 - you see a group of school children playing catch then when the girl throws the ball to one of the boys it takes his head off so if you had not read the information about the film this is what would tell you that the film is a horror. The other children then drop the ball and continue playing the game with the other boys head.

the rest of the opening continues with scenes where children are playing play ground games e.g skipping, where someone ends up dead.

title fonts used in Horror and Mystery films/experimentation with titles and fonts

Fonts used in Horror films

There are a lot of different fonts in horror, but the ones I wouldn't mind using are:
  • American Gothic typeface, this is the style that is famously used in Fright Night.
  • Saw font, the font style they use in saw
I'm also playing with some ideas for a title and the one I like most right now is "The Girl in the Woods". If i don't go with this I will go with The Girl, the Wolf and the Lumberjack

Fonts used in Mystery Films

Again there are a lot of different font types in mystery films, the ones that I might use are:
  • Roswell font - this one is used in a American sci-fi TV show called Roswell which is based on the Roswell high books
  • Bickham script typeface - this is the font style that the Pretty Little Liars title is in.
Saw Font
^The Girl in the Woods in saw font
Roswell Font
^The Girl in the Woods in Roswell font

The effect  that the saw font has on an audience is that it puts them on edge, which means they're really jumpy and even easier to scare, so when the film starts or the soundtrack (usually dark and spooky) starts the it doesnt take as much to scare them so when they are scared their adrenaline starts pumping which makes them even more edgy, this makes it easier for the film to play on their primal instincts and fears.

The effect the that the Roswell font has on the audience is that it intrigues them and draws them in, pair this with the right background and you will have something that grabs their attention.

media mind map

Ideas for film - horror/mystery

Person layingh on the ground dying:

Bleed out
Breathing gets shallower

Cold colours:

Greys, black, white, blue, browns etc

In the woods:

Bare/dead trees
Leaves cover the floor

Bold writing:

White on black
Background blurry, cold colours

Background sound:

Clock ticking
Music box playing
Clock=classic background sound
Music box=more sinister because people associate it with innocence because they are associated with children

Makeup:

Pale skin
Cuts on forehead +arms, stabwound (s) on stomach; blood and bruises on arms and face.

Costume/clothes:
Warm/practical;
Trainers, jeans/thick leggings (old ones) and a jumper/sweater/hoodie (old)
clothes will be torn and ripped and will have fake blood on them.

story board minus pictures (i couldnt find any that i liked)

okay so heres the plan for the story.
titles + opening credits, blurred, cold/darkly coloured background, writing is bold and stands out
sound of a ticking clock starts as the credits + titles fade
go from a slightly distant side view to a close up over view(if i can)
ocus camera on the character and blur the background
cut to a flshback (they arent flashbacks of what happened to them but happier memories, they signify that the characters life is flashing befgore their eyes)
cut back to the character, their breathing is getting slower and shallower and the sound of the clock is getting louder
flashback
cut to the character again (also whenever theres a flashback there's no sound)
he ticking stops, the character stops breathing, and you fade to black.
end of opening

screen shots/analysis 2

what i like about this is that he cold colours in the background makes the bold white writing stand out, what makes it stands out even more the fact that the background is blurry , this also draws your focus to aniel radcliffs face and then you notice he face inm the background.

this is when the music changes from being innocent to being dark and creepy s the child breaks the china dolls head and thatis what the camera is focused on

the thing that creeps me out in this sceneis the fact that they all do everything in synch and the tune of the music box in the background becomes sinister

the thing i like in this scene is the fact that you see the girls are playing with the dolld and it seems so inocent but then the music becomes sinister and dark.

Tuesday, 4 November 2014

In my film I'm either going to use a clock ticking or a music box as background music. One of the reasons I'm looking at using one of these two different sounds is that the clock is a classic sound for the genres im looking at doing, also it gives you the impression that their time is running out. The music box on the other hand is an innocent sound but if its used in a horror film makes it seem even creepier as most people associate music boxes with innocence and children.

research for horror and mystery genres/ back ground information

Horror

a genre of film that usually plays on its viewers most primal fears (our vulnerability, night mares, alienation and revulsion etc.)  to scare them/ get a negative emotional reaction from them. usually inspired/based on literature by authors like Edgar Allen Poe, Mary Shelley and Bran Stoker.
Elements include: Torture, supernatural origin, ghosts, vampires werewolves, demons, gore, cannibals and serial killers.
One of the main producers of horror films are Hammer Horror, they are a British based film production company that used to dominate the horror film market. This was partly due to their distribution partnerships with every major film company in the United States. They have recently produced the woman in black.

Mystery

A sub-genre of crime films and thrillers, they usually focus on a detective/private investigator/amateur sleuths efforts to solve a mystery surrounding a crime, the plot usually focuses more on their deductive abilities then the actual crime as that fades into the background as they use clues, witnesses, evidence, circumstances and their deduction abilities to solve the mystery. the five most notable mystery films are (as rated by the American film institute in 2008):
1) Vertigo (1958)
2)China town (1974)
3)Rear window (1954)
4)Laura (1944)
5)The third man (1949)
there are two types of mystery films, open and closed. Open reveals the identity of the killer at the start of the story and showcases "the perfect crime", you see the protagonist (main character) unravel later on. Closed(whodunit?) conceals the identity of the perpetrator until later on in the story, this causes an element of suspense when they are apprehended as the audience do not usually know who it is.

inspiration for short movie openings/analysis 1

The thing that i like in this opening that i want to use for my murder/mystery or horror short film is that in the beginning you see her dying and that it then reverses. i want to do something like this but its the complete opposite, you will seem them as they slowly die so originally they are on the floor and slowly their breathing gets shallower and slower and if they are injured/cut you will see the cut get worse and they will bleed out. what i may also do is rather than have a lullaby in the background i will either have a music box or the sound of a clock ticking. Also i will have flashbacks in but they wont be a back story it will show that their life is flashing before their eyes and they see some of their happier memories, the focus will be on them one minute and the next it will be a flashback. it will either be in dull cold colours e.g. browns, whites, blacks and greys, or just in black and white.

photos for short film ideas; possible locations

So I ment to put this on a while ago but my computer broke so I wasn't able to do it until today.
Here are some photos of the fields behind me and I'm thinking of using but even if i don't fowlmeads is behind me and the woods are thicker there so i can use them.

opening 1

What I like about this film opening:
I like this film for multiple reasons the main ones are:
Its the exact opposite of what a horror film should be, so for once you don't have to sit there watching it and saying " Don't go in the room, don't go in the room, she went in the room! that's why you don't go in the room!"
I think the narration in the first scene is effective but it should of been stopped after that. I also like the fact that the first scene is great because they way its shot makes it seems more like a horror film.
Also I think the scene where the kid ignores the box and starts playing on his phone is funny because it would usually be one of the things that set up a normal horror film. However the main reason I like this film is because its so simple: Its was simple to make and its simple to understand.

Suckablood - short fairytale horror from BloodyCuts.co.uk on Vimeo.
This is an original fairytale of horror. It is about a girl who is caught by her mother sucking her thumb so her mother summons the suckablood, a creature that eats people that suck their thumbs.
One of the things i like about this video is the narration: the narrator talks in rhymes, i consider this to be important because some fairytales rhyme and the sentences are short and most people associate short sentences with fairytales.

collage

This is a collage of things that I consider important: my siblings, my dog and a few photos from-the Scillys, Holland, Germany and France.

THE CANDIDATE from David Karlak on Vimeo.
The candidate is an original mystery. Its a video about a man who feels that he has been unfairly overlooked time and time again by his boss and is angry and annoyed that his presentation partner is always given the credit for each new client that he signs on. One day the candidate is visited by a member of a secret society that tells him about the society and what they do, the candidate presumes that he is there to recruit him but the man is actually there to tell him that he is to be a victim that there society is wishing dead for one of its member. One of the things I like about this film is that the man is almost constantly narrating the film and it starts with the sound of a ticking clock and I think this is significant because it shows that the victims time is running out.

If tomorrow starts without me from Camille Marotte on Vimeo.
This is a very touching and sentimental video, it is narrated by a man that sounds old and near the end of his life. This is important because he talks about his passing and how he misses his family and how everyone longs for yesterday. He talks about how in heaven no one longs for yesterday because today never ends and how when he died he was set free. What I like about the video is that there is music in the background for the whole duration of the video. The photo's used in the video show that no matter what happens time doesn't stop for anyone and everyday is the same and everything continues as normal until the day you die.

TWINS from passion panorama on Vimeo.
  - Twins
This is a touching video about a pair of identical teddy bears. The bears belong to a pair of twins. One day the eldest twin leaves, taking her bear with her. This video shows the adventure of the younger twin who is determined to reunite the bears. One of the things I like I about this video is that it always has sound in the background, whether its the teddy squeaking or the clap of thunder. Another thing I like about the video is that as the girl grows so does her bear, so by the end when she says good bye to her bear she realizes she has grown up and its symbolically shows that she is saying good bye to her childhood.

Wednesday, 10 September 2014

A love story that is told in three different time periods childhood, present and past life. The girl tells her father about a reoccurring dream she has, which she believes is a past life, she tells her father that she thinks the couple is them. The point of this story is to show that love can cross endless boundaries as well as exploring the idea of reincarnation. One of things I like about this short film is that it constantly has background noise, I also like the fact that they've used three different time periods to explain the story, as well as the use of fog later on in the flash backs. I like the use of fog because near the ending because it makes it seem mysterious, so you dont know whats going to happen next
