the company of wolves, research/analysis 3

The company of wolves (1984)
This film is an adaptation from the bloody chamber by Angela Carter and is a horror/fantasy. It is a story about a young girl who is told by her grandmother strange and disturbing stories about innocent girl that fall in love with handsome strangers that have smoldering looks in their eyes, about unexpected disappearances of spouses when the wolves howl in the woods when the moon is full. The film is directed by Neil Jordan.
Neil Jordan is an Irish a screen write, novelist and director, he has worked on Excalibur as a creative associate, and directed company of wolves, Mona Lisa, Angel, Borgias and Interview with a vampire as well as the commercial flop We're no Angels and many many more. His 1980's films Company of Wolves and Mona Lisa went on win him acclaim. Some of the awards he has won are:
Silver bear for best director for the film The butcher Boy at the Berlin international film festival
An Academy award, best original screenplay for The Crying Game
A Guardian Fiction Award for Night in Tunisia
Was nominated for a Golden Globe twice, one for best original screenplay for Mona Lisa and one for Best Director for The End of the Affair
He's also won an Irish Pen Award.

What I like about this film is the fact that while it makes the wolf her love interest it keeps to the original Grimm story and actually gives you a back story as well (see the wedding bit). One of the main reason I think this is such a great film is that it has a great mix of fantasy/horror and it was made before we had the effects that we have today and the combination of sticking to the story and the lack of effects that we have today make it a great horror film even though it has elements of fantasy. The lack of effects also mean that everyone that worked on it had to put in a lot more time and effort for the desired result.
The use of sound in the film and the trailer is brilliant as even though most if not all of it is non diagetic it is always parallel sound.
one of the things that inspires me about this film is the fact that it uses minimal special effects. I'm inspired by this because now-days its hard to find a film that doesn't rely on Special Effects and instead relies on the smaller things like the music or costumes, this inspires me because it proves that you don't need special effects to make a great movie.
