research for horror and mystery genres/ back ground information

Horror

a genre of film that usually plays on its viewers most primal fears (our vulnerability, night mares, alienation and revulsion etc.)  to scare them/ get a negative emotional reaction from them. usually inspired/based on literature by authors like Edgar Allen Poe, Mary Shelley and Bran Stoker.
Elements include: Torture, supernatural origin, ghosts, vampires werewolves, demons, gore, cannibals and serial killers.
One of the main producers of horror films are Hammer Horror, they are a British based film production company that used to dominate the horror film market. This was partly due to their distribution partnerships with every major film company in the United States. They have recently produced the woman in black.

Mystery

A sub-genre of crime films and thrillers, they usually focus on a detective/private investigator/amateur sleuths efforts to solve a mystery surrounding a crime, the plot usually focuses more on their deductive abilities then the actual crime as that fades into the background as they use clues, witnesses, evidence, circumstances and their deduction abilities to solve the mystery. the five most notable mystery films are (as rated by the American film institute in 2008):
1) Vertigo (1958)
2)China town (1974)
3)Rear window (1954)
4)Laura (1944)
5)The third man (1949)
there are two types of mystery films, open and closed. Open reveals the identity of the killer at the start of the story and showcases "the perfect crime", you see the protagonist (main character) unravel later on. Closed(whodunit?) conceals the identity of the perpetrator until later on in the story, this causes an element of suspense when they are apprehended as the audience do not usually know who it is.
